Our Successes
The Great Plastic Purge of the Lower Susquehanna Annual Event will take place on October 14 & 15 2023. For our last Great Plastic Purge, we partnered with Penn State Master Watershed Stewards, Watershed Alliance of York, Lancaster Conservancy and Susquehanna National Heritage Area to host this massive cleanup on Lake Clarke. This “lake” or reservoir is mostly Lancaster waters and is formed by the Safe Harbor Dam.
During this two day event, our volunteers removed a total of 5,920 pounds of single-use plastics, styrofoam, tires and trash from four locations on the Lower Susquehanna River! This awesome event helped raise the TRASHOMETER reading – which was tracking our yearly total along with our partner organizations- to hit our goal of collecting 50,000 pounds in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act! In 2022, we removed over 57,000 pounds or 28.5 tons of single use plastics, tires, foam and trash from our waterways.
