About the Cleanup Program
The Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper has been hosting cleanup events since its inception back in 2006. In 2022, we will be hosting monthly cleanups April – November.
Throughout 2020 and 2021 we have been regularly cleaning up the banks along the Accomac Shores and Marietta.
Our Successes
To date we have removed over 4 tons of plastics and trash from the surrounding area. Big thanks to John Naylor for all his support!
The Great Plastic Purge of the Lower Susquehanna Annual Event will take place on October 15 & 16 2022. For our last Great Plastic Purge, we partnered with Penn State Master Watershed Stewards, Watershed Alliance of York and York County Coalition for Clean Waters to host this massive cleanup on Lake Clarke. This “lake” or reservoir is mostly Lancaster waters and is formed by the Safe Harbor Dam.
We had over 120 volunteers cleaning up the banks and the many islands filling up two 40-yard dumpster containers full of single use plastics, tires, Styrofoam, and other trash totaling over 5.5 tons! It was a tremendous success and our volunteers had an amazing time keeping single use plastics out of the River.
